Companion Caregiver

Position summary

The Companion Caregiver provides non-medical companion and homemaker services that promote client independence, safety, comfort, and quality of life while allowing clients to remain safely in their homes. Services are provided in accordance with Noble Life policies, New Hampshire Administrative Rule He-P 822, applicable New Hampshire laws, and all federal employment and workplace safety requirements.

Companion Caregivers provide companionship, supervision, light housekeeping, meal preparation, transportation, shopping assistance, and other non-personal care services. Personal care services requiring specialized training or outside the employee's authorized scope of practice shall not be performed.

Essential job responsibilities & requirements

Companion services

  • Provide companionship and social interaction.
  • Engage clients in conversation and meaningful activities.
  • Encourage independence and client choice.
  • Provide emotional support while maintaining professional boundaries.
  • Accompany clients on walks, appointments, errands, and community outings.
  • Assist with recreational and social activities.

Homemaker services

  • Light housekeeping.
  • Laundry and linen changes.
  • Meal planning and meal preparation.
  • Grocery shopping and errands.
  • Organization of household areas used by the client.
  • Assistance with correspondence and reading.
  • Pet care limited to client-related tasks.

Safety and observation

  • Observe changes in the client's condition, behavior, or environment.
  • Promptly report concerns to the Administrator or Supervisor.
  • Maintain a safe home environment.
  • Assist with fall prevention through observation and environmental awareness.
  • Report accidents, incidents, injuries, hazards, abuse, neglect, or exploitation immediately according to company policy.

Transportation

  • Transport clients using approved vehicles when assigned.
  • Maintain a valid driver's license and required automobile insurance if driving is required.
  • Follow safe driving practices at all times.

Documentation

  • Complete accurate visit documentation before the end of each shift.
  • Document services provided, observations, and client concerns.
  • Report missed visits or unusual occurrences immediately.

Services not authorized

Companion Caregivers shall not perform duties outside their assigned scope of practice, including but not limited to:

  • Skilled nursing services
  • Medication administration
  • Medication setup
  • Personal care requiring specialized training unless separately trained and authorized
  • Medical treatments
  • Wound care
  • Catheter care
  • Injections
  • Any service requiring professional licensure

Questions regarding authorized duties shall be referred to the Administrator before providing services.

Employee responsibilities

  • Respect each client's dignity, privacy, independence, cultural preferences, and personal choices.
  • Maintain confidentiality of all client information.
  • Follow Noble Life policies and procedures.
  • Maintain appropriate professional boundaries.
  • Arrive on time and prepared for each scheduled shift.
  • Notify the office immediately of scheduling conflicts or emergencies.
  • Participate in required orientation, competency evaluations, and continuing education.

Minimum qualifications

Applicants must:

  • Be at least 18 years of age.
  • Possess the ability to read, write, and communicate effectively in English.
  • Demonstrate good judgment and interpersonal skills.
  • Be legally authorized to work in the United States.
  • Successfully complete all required background screening.
  • Successfully complete Noble Life orientation.
  • Meet all health screening requirements established by Noble Life and applicable New Hampshire regulations.

Preferred qualifications include prior experience working with older adults or individuals with disabilities.

Physical requirements

This position requires the ability to:

  • Sit, stand, bend, kneel, and walk for extended periods.
  • Lift and carry up to 25 pounds.
  • Perform light housekeeping activities.
  • Safely navigate client homes.
  • Drive throughout the service area when assigned.
  • Respond appropriately during emergencies.

Work environment

Services are performed in private residences throughout Noble Life's service area. Employees may encounter:

  • Weather-related driving conditions

Local travel between client homes is an essential function of this position.
